- Educating people is an imperative need to provide employment.
- Due to prudent and conservative norms India’s growth has slowed down but never went into a de-growth mode as it was with the US, Japan, etc.
- The Indian economy is in a fairly good shape, as we are not so dependent on exports like other countries, and rural India has tremendous potential.
- Even during recession, job creation is continuing to happen, but not as it was in the earlier years. According to the latest survey, in which ~ 4500 companies participated, and there will be +ve net hiring, and there will be a marginal increase in no. of hires. Specific to s/w industry there are 26000 jobs available for fresher(s) during the year.
- Institutions are facing challenges in providing employment to their students and it is reality of life. Will they be unemployed forever? Certainly not! economy will certainly revive, but in this interim period we have a tremendous amount of challenge as a society.
- Map the unemployed youth with the industry requirements.
- Transform our engineers from IQ driven to EQ driven.
- Increase capabilities, skills of our students.
- Teach the students ethics and values before they start their career.
Some of the measures we may take to overcome the situation:
Short Term:
- Bring back 75% of unemployable students to colleges, train them to improve their Technical Skills, Soft skills, Presentation Skills, Language capabilities, Behaviour etc.,
- Make them understand different cultures around the world.
- Teach them foreign languages such as German, French, Japanese, Spanish, and Italian at college level. This will help address many more markets around the world.
Medium Term:
- Focus not only on Engineering Graduates but also encourage others like Polytechnic, ITI, students who are totally neglected.
- Increase our value chain in terms of our offerings.
- Bring in New Technologies, Innovation and encourage Entrepreneurs.
- Curriculum needs change; Leading edge technologies have to become part and parcel of Academia.
- R&D is another area to focus on innovation and research.
Long Term:
- Taking leadership initiatives, and it is all about "don’t preach it, but practice it".
Govt. is also increasing spending and funding across sectors, which in turn help industry to create more jobs. As industries turnaround, economies will turnaround. But it will be a bumpy ride for a while. |
